Access to this cemetery may be best in a four-wheel drive or similiar vehicle.

From Paris Court Square, take 641N/54 North toward Puryear for approximately 4 miles. Turn right (East) on Rowe School Road and follow for less than 1/2 mile where the road will "T". Continue on Rowe School Road by turning left (North). After just less than a mile, turn right (East) on Shankle Road. This road is gravel and appears to be seasonally graded, so be careful in rainy or muddy conditions. After about 200 yards, a left turn will become possible on a dirt (and possibly not graded) road. Take the time to judge whether this dirt road is passable before driving it. The cemetery is about 20 yards from this intersection.

Travel time from Paris Court Square is approximately 15-20 minutes.

Condition Back to Top
The Old Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery sits extremely removed from society in a wooded area near the old Paris- Murray Road. The author is not aware of any details regarding the church but is aware that the location was heavily surrounded by many long-time Henry County families such as Conyers, McConnell, McCutcheon, McFarland, Pillow, Terry and a few others. This would have been a meeting place for a large number of them and, for one, it is quite a shame to see the area as badly treated as it is today.

Frankly there are hardly any structures along Shankle Road at present. Probably due to its VERY remote nature, some people treat the road's surrounds as a place to dump trash and other unwanted material.

The cemetery itself is spared from any large amount of dumping, but trash can be readily spotted in its vicinity. Descendants of the McFarland and Pillow families have placed stones at several graves in the past few decades, so there is proof of some recent sympathetic treatment of the site. It seems that the cemetery can be divided into two sections, the older portion to the left (if facing the cemetery from the south) and a newer section to the right. In the older section are predominantly the Howard, Jobe, McConnell and Terry names and in the newer section are predominantly the Aycock, McFarland and Pillow names. A small amount of broomsage and leaves obscure the ground in the newer section, and groundcover almost obscures the entirety of the older section. The author woefully admits that the groundcover may have even obscured some broken stones from sight altogether in the older section.

There are a lot of broken stones, that is, more than comfortably seen in a cemetery of this size. We can only say this is due to age so much - but it is this author's opinion that some of these broken stones may be due to human negligence or intent. Overall, the cemetery is just too remote and therefore forgotten to benefit from its deserved upkeep.

Cemeteries such as this are the reason we do what we do.
